Question text
09 A wide variety of species exists on Earth.
Most scientists accept Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection as the
explanation for this variety of species.

How to answer it
Evidence for Evolution: Fossils & Genetics
Specification Links: 4.6.3.1 – 4.6.3.7, 4.6.4 (Evolution, Fossils, Genetics, and Natural Selection)
- Fossil record: How physical remains provide chronological evidence of structural changes, common ancestors, and extinctions.
- Genetic mechanisms: The discovery of DNA, Mendel's inheritance units, chromosomes, and how mutations cause variation passed on by natural selection.
- Extended response structuring: Writing a balanced, logically sequenced 6-mark answer addressing two distinct prompts.
Developing Our Understanding of Evolution
Explain how our understanding of evolution has developed due to: (1) fossil evidence, and (2) increased understanding of the mechanisms of genetics.
- Level 3 (5–6 marks): Relevant points are identified, given in detail, and logically linked to form a clear account. Must cover both fossils and genetics.
- Level 2 (3–4 marks): Relevant points are identified with attempts at logical linking, but may be incomplete or focus heavily on only one aspect.
- Level 1 (1–2 marks): Isolated points stated simply without clear relevance or logical sequence.
💡 Key Knowledge Checklist
1. Fossil Evidence:
- Fossils provide direct evidence of organisms that lived millions of years ago.
- They show that organisms have changed progressively over geological time (simpler to more complex).
- Shows relatedness and links between past and modern species (e.g. evolutionary trees).
- Provides proof of species extinction.
2. Mechanisms of Genetics:
- Darwin knew traits were inherited but did not know the mechanism.
- Gregor Mendel showed inheritance works via separate "units" (genes/alleles).
- Observing chromosome behaviour in cell division linked genes to physical structures.
- Discovery of DNA structure explained how genetic information is copied and codes for proteins.
- Mutations explain how new genetic variation arises; advantageous alleles are passed to offspring.
✅ Model Full-Mark Response (Level 3: 6/6)
Fossil Evidence:
Fossils are the preserved remains of organisms from millions of years ago. By examining fossils found in different rock layers, scientists can track how species have changed over geological time, showing that modern organisms evolved from simpler life forms. Transitional fossils also provide proof of common ancestors and show how organisms alive today are related. Furthermore, fossils show evidence of species that have become extinct when they failed to adapt.
Mechanisms of Genetics:
Darwin could not explain the physical mechanism behind how traits were passed between generations. Later work by Mendel showed that characteristics are inherited in distinct units, which we now know as genes and alleles. Discoveries of chromosome behaviour during meiosis and the double-helix structure of DNA proved how genetic material is stored and replicated.
Today, we understand that mutations cause random changes in DNA sequence, creating genetic variation. Organisms with advantageous alleles are more likely to survive, reproduce, and pass these genes to their offspring, fully confirming Darwin's theory of natural selection.
🧠 Exam Technique & Examiner Insight
- Balance is mandatory: The Level 3 descriptor explicitly requires detail on both fossils and genetics. Even a perfect essay on fossils alone will be capped at Level 2 (maximum 4 marks).
- Use two clear sub-headings: Write a header for "Fossil evidence" and one for "Genetic mechanisms". This forces you to cover both areas and helps examiners tick off criteria.
- Explain, do not just describe: Don't just define what a fossil is; explain how it developed our understanding (e.g. "by showing gradual changes over time").
- Name key scientific concepts: Include terms like alleles , mutation , extinction , DNA structure , and Mendel to access top band marks easily.
❌ Common Errors to Avoid
- Only writing about Darwin's finches: Giving a story about Darwin's voyage to the Galápagos misses the focus of the question (fossils and modern genetics).
- Claiming fossils prove evolution is 100% complete: Remember to note that there are still gaps in the fossil record because many early organisms were soft-bodied or conditions weren't right for fossilisation.
- Lamarckian phrasing: Saying organisms "mutated in order to survive" or "adapted their genes". Mutations occur by chance; natural selection selects them.
- Omitting Mendel and DNA: Many students write general natural selection points and completely forget the historical and molecular discoveries of genetics.
